World of Color

I thought Disneyland's World of Color show was pretty spectacular, but it doesn't compare with the color show going on in the mountains right now.  Here are some pictures that my roommate took on a hike up to Maple Flat (just south of Y Mountain) yesterday.  Pictures can only hint at the magnificence.

Bridges Over Running Water

I love hiking while the rivers are full, but it seems like the snow comes down from the peaks so quickly.  I hiked a ways up Slate Canyon a couple of times in June, but there was very little water.  I went up Rock Canyon a little ways earlier this week, and still found quite a bit of water coming through there.  I'm interested to keep tabs on it this year and see how long it lasts.  I've also always wondered how many bridges there are up that canyon, but have never bothered to count until this week.

To The Peak

Provo Peak is a large dome shaped peak towering behind "Y" Mountain.  It is easily seen anywhere west of University Avenue.  Rather than going to most direct route, we're going to take the scenic path.  We'll start at Rock Canyon and take the first right fork.  That will take us up behind "Y" Mountain.  We'll hike around another small peak and then descend to Squaw Peak Road, and the base of Provo Peak.  The trail then just wraps up the face to the summit.  On the way out we'll simply go north on Squaw Peak Road to Rock Canyon, and then just go straight down that trail.  I'm guessing it will take about 7 hours total.  Meet in AA1 at 7:00 AM this Saturday!

Saturday Afternoon Hike!

Meet at 1:00, AA1 this Saturday. We'll head up Provo canyon and hike up the Big Spring Hollow Canyon. I've never been on this trail in the summer, but when I was on it with snowshoes it was was pretty level. If we get in far enough it will start to climb quickly. We could make it a 2 hour to a 5 hour hike depending on the schedules and interest levels of those who show up. This ought to be a great hike!

The water levels were pretty high. Obviously this bridge wasn't much help.

The Best Canyon in Provo

Although this is my personal opinion, I think Slate Canyon is the prettiest canyon in Provo. That's why we'll probably hike it several times throughout the summer. This is the same trail that we hiked a few weeks ago, but all the snow should be cleared up by now. I'm guessing it's about a 5 or 6 mile hike. It goes up Slate Canyon and comes down Slide Canyon (the 'Y' trail). Because of the elevation gain I would say it's a moderately difficult hike. I estimate it will take 4 maybe 5 hours. We will have the option of shooting up to the peak of 'Y' mountain if we feel like it which would add about 30 min. If you're up for a good hike this week meet in AA1 at 9:00 Saturday Morning.

Peak Week!

This week we will be climbing Squaw Peak. It's the shortest and easiest peak around, but it is a lot of fun. I'm estimating it taking about 2 hour up and an hour down. The hike isn't too long, but it climbs really quickly (whoever made the trail must not have known about switch backs). If you want to come meet at AA1 at 9:00 this Saturday morning.

Hike this Week!

The weather looks like it will be good this week, so we'll plan for another hike on Saturday.  I would like to try a trail I've never been on before.  It's in Pleasant Grove and goes up Battle Creek Canyon.  I understand it's pretty easy; it looks like it's only a couple of miles.  Supposedly we will be able to hike in to a waterfall.  We'll plan to meet in AA1 at 9:00 Saturday morning.  Come ready to hike!
